The dogs behind Bogart’s Legacy.

Bogart

Born May 28, 2018 — Died June 30, 2026

Bogart was social, affectionate, loyal, funny, emotionally intuitive, and always interested in being part of whatever was happening. He loved people, loved attention, and had just enough mischief in him to make life more interesting.

At dog shows, Bogart was less interested in the mechanics of showing than in the people around him. To him, a show was a social event. He wanted to connect.

His bond with Jill was extraordinary. Years earlier, another deeply loved dog, Lenox, had held a similar place in her life; when Bogart was born, his markings, expression, and the connection he formed with Jill were so reminiscent of Lenox that he was often called “little Lenox.”

Bogart never seemed particularly concerned with his size. If Jill sat down, he was perfectly capable of climbing straight into her lap and settling in as though he were a much smaller dog. Being close to her was usually the point.

Bogart’s illness changed everything, but it does not define the eight years he lived. He was a beloved member of the family first — and the heart behind both Bogart’s Journey and Bogart’s Legacy.

Coco

Coco was, in many ways, a dream come true. After years of breeding only a small number of carefully planned litters, Jill finally produced a dog who reminded her phenotypically of Crystal — the Collie she had long considered her dream dog.

But Coco was never simply a reflection of another dog. She had a wonderfully distinct, multifaceted personality of her own.

She was a determined watchdog who took that responsibility very seriously. Anyone arriving at the door was met with enough intensity that getting inside could be an adventure — and a few people lovingly nicknamed her “Cujo.”

Once a visitor was welcomed into the house, however, Coco was completely different. She genuinely adored people and quickly treated accepted guests like friends.

She was funny, spirited, affectionate, protective, and a wonderful mother — a dog who meant an enormous amount to Jill both for what she represented in her breeding program and for who she was as an individual.

Her loss was devastating, and she remains one of the dogs whose absence Jill still feels deeply.

Crystal

Crystal was Jill’s goddess — the dog she had dreamed of owning.

She came from the late, legendary Joyce Weinmann, who told Jill more than once that Crystal had been the pick of the litter. Jill was still very new to showing dogs at the time and once asked Joyce why she had entrusted such an exceptional puppy to her. Joyce’s answer stayed with her: she simply had a feeling about Jill, and the two of them had connected.

That trust meant even more as the years went on, because Crystal became one of the most important dogs of Jill’s life.

She had a kind of natural elegance that showed up in everything she did. Other dogs could come in from outside covered in mud while Crystal somehow remained spotless. Jill would watch her carefully choose where she stepped, as if getting dirty simply was not part of her plan.

But Crystal was not aloof or overly serious. She was fun, easygoing, and wonderfully sweet. At shows she was usually professionally handled, but one time Jill took her into the ring herself. Crystal was so delighted to have Jill beside her that she spent much of the time trying to get her attention and play instead of concentrating on being a show dog.

People consistently commented on her exceptionally sweet temperament, and just as importantly, she passed that temperament on to her offspring.

Crystal’s importance extended well beyond the show ring. She became the foundation bitch of Spellbound Collies and had a lasting influence on Jill’s breeding program through both her quality and the sweet, steady temperament she consistently passed on to her descendants.

She was, for Jill, the dream dog of a lifetime.

Ciara

Born May 28, 2018 — Living

Ciara is bubbly, full of life, and enthusiastic about almost everything. To her, most things are fun. She approaches the world with energy, curiosity, and a happy spirit that makes her hard not to smile at.

Ciara and Jill have had countless adventures together — with friends, relatives, and even strangers along the way. She loves riding in the car, notices everything around her, and makes absolutely sure Jill knows that she noticed it.

Ciara loves food and is usually ready for a treat before Jill has even decided what she is handing out. If Jill is in the kitchen, Ciara is there. If Jill is on a Zoom call, Ciara may put her front feet on Jill’s thighs, appear on camera, and deliver kisses. She does not miss much, and very little gets past her.

She has always loved her one-on-one time with Jill and has been the one dog consistently on the bed beside her since she was young. She is alert, affectionate, intensely present, and almost always by Jill’s side.

Bogart was not only Ciara’s littermate but her best friend. Ciara initiated play with him constantly; the two of them would race around the house three or four times before finally settling down. Since Bogart’s death, there are moments when Ciara still starts that familiar run — only now there is no Bogart there to chase her.

Paris

Born May 28, 2018 — Living

Paris has always been the quieter, more reserved of the three littermates. At home she is sweet and affectionate; away from home, she has often preferred to keep her own counsel.

When Bogart and Ciara competed for Jill’s attention, Paris often chose simply to walk away rather than push her way in. Since Bogart’s death, that has begun to change. With the household now just Jill, Paris, and Ciara, Paris has become more present and more willing to put herself in the middle of things — even wagging her tail far more readily than she once did.

Paris is also remarkably easy to live with: quiet, well behaved, and able to go almost anywhere with Jill. She came through two major orthopedic surgeries and months of rehabilitation, therapy, and acupuncture with the same composed temperament.

Bubba

Born May 28, 2018 — Died May 2025

No dog could have been more adored than Bubba. His mom and dad built their lives around him, and he almost always had someone at home with him. Friends and neighbors arranged play dates because Bubba was not simply loved by his family; he was loved throughout their circle.

His dad was an attorney, and during COVID and afterward many court matters were handled online. Bubba was so often beside him that the judges came to know him too. He became part of the working day simply by being exactly where he wanted to be — with his person.

Bubba also had a life full of adventure. Long five- and six-mile walks were part of his routine, and his naturally social personality made the world feel like a place full of people, animals, and possibilities worth meeting.

He was one of those dogs people never forgot — deeply loved by everyone who knew him, and dearly missed.

Bryce

Chyna

Jill had the name Chyna picked out before the litter was even born. Her father, Lenox, had been named for Lenox china, so Jill already knew one of his daughters would carry the name Chyna.

As a breeder, Jill watched the puppies closely from the beginning, and very early on she knew which one she intended to keep. Chyna was breathtakingly beautiful even as a tiny puppy, and Jill was already telling people, “She’s a keeper.”

One of Jill’s earliest memories of her came before the puppies’ eyes had opened. One day, Jill opened the door to the room where the whelping box was, and Chyna immediately reacted to the sound — jumping up and moving toward the direction of Jill’s voice and the noise at the door.

Days later, when Chyna opened her eyes for the first time and looked at Jill, the moment felt magical. By then Jill had already chosen her, but that first look deepened the connection.

As she grew, Chyna became an easygoing, obedient, dependable, loving dog who was very much part of the family.

She was not simply an important dog in Bogart’s pedigree. She was one of Jill’s own — chosen almost from the beginning and deeply loved throughout her life.

Lenox

Lenox was one of the great loves of Jill’s life.

He was a beautiful dog with a soft, expressive face and gentle eyes — the same kind of sweetness in expression that Jill would later see again in Bogart. He was used selectively as a sire and produced beautiful litters, passing along not only his type and expression, but also his sweet, soft, gentle temperament.

But what defined Lenox most was his bond with Jill. He adored her. One of Jill’s favorite memories is waking from a nap on a lounge chair and discovering Lenox stretched out on top of her. She had never felt him climb up and had no idea how he had managed it without waking her. He simply wanted to be as close to her as possible.

At his first show, when he was only six months old, Jill remembers him prancing along beside her, clearly having a wonderful time because he was in the ring with her.

As Lenox matured, he was never especially interested in the mechanics of being shown. But if he spotted Jill outside the ring, everything changed. He would perk up immediately — chest out, neck arched, expression alive — and suddenly look exactly the way a show Collie was supposed to look. Judges sometimes thought they had captured his attention, when in reality Lenox was focused entirely on Jill.

He earned his championship, but the ribbons were never what made Lenox unforgettable.

Years later, when Bogart was born, Jill immediately saw something familiar in him. His markings, his expression, and eventually the depth of the connection he formed with her brought Lenox back to mind so strongly that Bogart was often called “little Lenox.”

Lenox left his mark in the puppies and generations that followed — in their beauty, expression, and the gentle temperament he passed forward — but for Jill, his greatest legacy was personal. He was simply one of those once-in-a-lifetime dogs.

Lexi

Lexi was a beautiful, affectionate, wonderfully obedient dog who fit easily into family life. She loved attention, enjoyed being close to the people she loved, and was always happy to accept a good belly rub.

Some dogs leave behind a long list of memorable adventures; others become so naturally woven into everyday life that their presence simply feels permanent. Lexi was one of those dogs — easy to live with, deeply loved, and very much part of the family.

She was, quite simply, a very good girl.

Dexter

Dexter was a breathtaking puppy with an inviting personality and an early show-ring presence that judges noticed immediately. At his first shows as a six-to-nine-month-old puppy, he did exceptionally well and looked every bit the promising young Collie Jill believed he could become.

Jill ultimately placed Dexter with her good friend Chris in Virginia, someone she trusted completely and who had already shared his life with other Spellbound Collies. It proved to be exactly the right home.

Dexter and Chris did everything together — long walks, hiking, vacations, trips to local stores, and the ordinary daily companionship that makes a dog part of a person’s life. Dexter had a phenomenal one-on-one life and was deeply loved.

Comex

Comex was absolutely magnificent — Jill’s pick puppy from the litter. He had a sweetness of personality that reminded her of his dad, Lenox, with a bit of spunk from his mom, Lexi — the perfect combination. Fun, outgoing, and confident, he was eventually placed in a wonderful home in Canada, enjoying one-on-one time with his family for a very happy life.

Tiara

Tiara was one of Jill’s great favorites from that generation — breathtakingly beautiful, deeply bonded to her, and completely unforgettable.

She came from Jill’s second litter ever, the first litter out of Crystal, and it was an extraordinary one. Tiara, Lenox, and Tiffany were all part of that litter, but Tiara was the standout beauty in Jill’s eyes: elegant, feminine, and absolutely stunning.

She was also Jill’s Velcro dog of that generation. Tiara wanted to be with her, near her, and involved in whatever was happening. That bond made everything she accomplished feel even more special, and Jill was enormously proud of her championship.

But Tiara was not simply beautiful. She was mischievous, funny, and very capable of getting herself into trouble — which was part of what made her so endearing.

One memory Jill still laughs about is the day Tiara came inside literally knee-deep in mud and looked enormously pleased with herself. Cleaning her front legs and paws took what felt like forever, while Tiara seemed completely satisfied with what she had accomplished.

Tiara and Lenox could hardly have been more different in personality, but Jill loved them equally for very different reasons. If she had ever been forced to choose a favorite between the two, she could not have done it.

Tiara was beautiful enough to take your breath away, but what Jill remembers most is the dog underneath the beauty — funny, devoted, mischievous, affectionate, and always close by.

Tiffany

Tiffany was, quite simply, a love bug.

She was quieter than Tiara, but she had an enormous need for affection and closeness. Attention was never really enough for Tiffany; she always wanted a little more, and almost everyone who visited Jill’s home noticed her. People would ask about Tiffany long after meeting her because she had a way of making herself emotionally unforgettable.

Tiffany was deeply attached to Jill and needed more affection and reassurance than most. There were times Jill wondered whether she might thrive with one-on-one attention, but Tiffany was also part of the close trio she shared with Tiara and Lenox. In the end, Jill could not bring herself to separate them — or to let Tiffany go.

Unlike Jill’s other dogs, who took even the tiniest treat with exquisite gentleness, Tiffany approached snacks with considerably more enthusiasm — often taking the treat and what felt like half of Jill’s hand along with it.

She may not have been the loudest or most mischievous dog in the household, but she had a different kind of presence — soft, affectionate, devoted, and always looking for one more moment of love.

Avery

Avery was part of Crystal’s second litter and was chosen by Amanda MacLeod of Colwick Collies in Canada as her foundation bitch after Amanda made several trips to Pennsylvania to see the litter.

Jill saw Avery only occasionally after she left, so this profile does not pretend to describe a day-to-day life Jill did not witness. What remained striking was the consistency of every report from Amanda: from puppyhood through the end of her life at twelve, Avery was described again and again as absolutely perfect — easy, well behaved, dependable, and deeply loved.

In that respect, she seemed to carry forward one of Crystal’s most memorable qualities.
